Please help!! I have downloaded several AVI files, but all play a black screen, althought the counter runs as normal. Can anyone explain how I can resolve this. (Excuse my ignorance, I'm new to this)

Either you're lacking a required codec for proper playback, or the files are fakes. In order to provide information needed to determine the status of your file(s), do the following:
1) Load the .AVI file into VirtualDub or NanDub
2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"
3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box -
Details as follows (from Virtualdub):
Frame size: 352x288, 25fps (40000 micro)
Frames: 93708
Decompressor: DivX 5.0 2 codec
No of key frames: 313
Min/avg/max/ total key frame size: 1132/1132/1133 (347k)
Min/avg/max/total delta frame size: 58/58/58 (5290k)Comment

Although you haven't bothered to post the audio information, based on the indication that all delta frames are the same size (minimum/maximum/average), I would speculate that you've downloaded a phony file.
(If you don't have the DivX v.5.02 codec installed, download and install it, reboot, and try to run the video again)Comment

if your other avi files are xvid, you should get that codec in the nimo or tsunami pack.Comment
