what is the best computer for video editing?

    Hi

I need to upgrade the Proccessor,Memory and motherboard and my budged is 600$.

i want it to be able to run Maya,Studio max,Premire,After Affects. its for privete use but i need the speed and power for video editing and 3d rendering. i dont have all of those softwares but i'll buy one of them.

any recommandations for those 3 components will be welcome.

    Thanks un advance

For anything to do with video, lots of processing power is recommended, and if youre a serious user i would suggest getting at least a P4 2GHz+ chip. As for the motherboard, doesn't really matter as long as it is not for an AMD computer, make sure its supports the P4 chipset. And the memory, well you can never go wrong with memory and you can never have "too much". If its DDR memory (most new motherboards have that) then get at least 256, even 512MB.

I highly recommend using an AMD Athlon, for video editing (and for any thing else for that matter). An AthlonXP 2000+ will easily keep up with a 2ghz P4, in most of the apps you mention, at a significantly lower price. At the same price as the 2ghz P4 you can get a Athlon 2400+, which will slap the P4 silly, in just about all the apps you mention.

Buying a P4 makes very little sense to me, unless you really wish to turn the CPU market into a monopoly. Which will be very very bad for all of us, in the long run.

And even if I were to buy an Intel cpu, a P4 would be my last choice for a budget PC, a celeron will offer you a significantly better price/preformance ratio.

For processors, shop around for a good deal. Unless there is a substantial price difference between an Athlon or Intel P4, I would recommend a Pentium 4.

Also, you will require, at minimum a decent graphics card.
ATI sells an entry-level professional graphics card for some $400 (the name of the card escapes my memory).

You should see what kind of machines Maya,Studio max,Premire, After Affects run best on (a search on google may be helpful).

          Hi

I've found an article which is very fit to my needs.
i wanna hear what you have to say about this offer guys:

          Motherboard : Gigabyte GA-7DPXDW (220$)
          Memory : 1GB RAM sticks . PC2100 ECC registered DDR DIMMs. (240$)
          Proccessor : AMD Athlon MP 2000+ (160&)

I was wondering...can i run only one proccessor? can i get only 512 Mb PC2100 ECC registered
DDR DIMMs and keep the money for the another proccessor so i have doul proccessing?

So i got reasonable price 620$ and an option of upgrade in the future. this article seems
to be a little bit old.what you think?

          The Article :

          Thanks

In P4's 3.06GhZ there is a new feature called "hyperthreading". Basically it allows one processor to act like two on certain tasks. It's expensive, but if you're going to buy another processor i would go ahead and buy this fast CPU. You will certainly notice a difference when editing video.

Sounds like a bit of a waste of money if ask me. You can get an equally fast single CPU AthlonXP system at just over half the cost (save about 200 bucks, and pop in a AthlonXP 3200+, for about 150$ in 12 months time). But make sure to get a Nforce2 MB and DDR400 RAMs, to ensure the best possible upgrade path.

                Hi

                Upgrade option #1 :

                Motherboard :
                A7N8X Deluxe nForce2 AMD Athlon XP/Duron, Socket A, ATX, 3GB DDR-SDRAM, 333MHz FSB (129$)

                Proccessor :
                Athlon XP 2700+ (2.16GHZ, 256KB, 333MHz, Socket A) (287&)

                Memory :
                Kingston 512MB PC2700 SDRAM DIMM(83$)

                Total : 499$

This offer makes good with my budged but does it makes good for video editing and 3d rendering?

                Upgrade option 2:

                Motherboard :
                GA-8INXP (E7205) Pentium 4 HT, Socket 478, 4GB DDR-SDRAM, 533MHz FSB(233$)

                Proccessor :
                Pentium 4 (2.53GHz 512KB, 533MHz, Socket 478)(191$)

                Memory :
                Kingston 512MB PC2700 SDRAM DIMM(83$)

                Total :507$

this setup is also good for my budged but i'll let you guys reccommand where to cut and where to add.

                Thank in advance
                Shay

I would go for #2. What kind of graphics card does it have?

That card is so picky on drivers it isn't even funny. If you don't get the exact one then you screen goes blank...

go to www.pricewatch.com and find there the loweset price of your components. pricewatch searches thousands and thousands of online vendors for the lowest price fot the same product. i would suggest a TYAN or Shuttle motherboard, and a p4 above 2.53ghz (the price has dramatically dropped in the past 2 months to now a stable price), a DDR ram 512 - *1gb(if you have the money). lots of people say that AMD processors are cheaper than Pentiums, NOT true. you may save 10-20 dollars when you get a processor of the same price, but the FSB of an athlon is 266mhz(the minimum for running ddr) and the FSB of the newer p4's are up to 800/533!
dont get the high brand of a product because you are on a budget, and y9ou shouldnt spend more than you need.

oh, if you have money left over, you can get a nice geforce 3 ti200 64/128 for 60-100 dollars. this is a very nice graphic card.

is there somrthing i should be awar of with Gigabyte board ? i have a Shuttle board for 5 years now and i never had any problems with it.TYAN has many on-board cards so its not what im looking for. Gygabyte seems to have all the supports i need. really?

and a p4 above 2.53ghz (the price has dramatically dropped in the past 2 months to now a stable price),
                            P4 3.06GHz cost 642$. its 451$ more than the 2.4GHz.
                            .See it here

I've heard good things about ASUS motherboards. Search google.com or a hardware forum (maybe anandtech.com).
