Newbie w/ DVD burner

Trying to figure out how to fit 7-9 gigs of info on a 4.7gig disc, does anyone know how to fit a full dvd on DVD+RW disc that is playable in standalone players. I have Win98, DVD 100i, 40gig hd, cd+rw 9100i, 48X cd, Dazzle video capt. any help would be great. Trying to keep the best quality possible or I would just try VCD's.
