      Ok,
Open the AVI in NanDub and then goto File/Save Wav.

Save the file under a different name. (e.g sound.wav)

Now, you should have a file called sound.wav

      Rename it to sound.ac3

Open in Besweet and convert to mp3.

              Two Tower

I have two towers problems as well... I cut up the file to 4 400 mb files so i can burn it to vcd, was that even necessary? I got it to the point where i extracted the sound to wav, changed the extension to .ac3, but when i try to convert it with the besweet GUI, i get an error message. if ANYONE has encoded the two towers successfully, PLEASE post!

I have done TTT to 1CD with XviD. What exactly are you trying to convert to?
What is the error. How did you extract to wav?

                  Okay I did it, I used the virtualdub ac3 version and ripped a xxx.ac3 file from the original avi. Then I took the xx.ac3 file and transfered it into a wav via besweet. With that wav I encoded a mpg via TMPGEnc, it was only like 100 megs smaller (original avi was 717megs and mpg was like 640 megs). I was unable to view the mpg on my computer, but I took a chance and burned it into a vcd via nero and it worked on my dvd player! There were some settings in TMPGenc that I took note to remember;

                  In MPEG Setting-
Video tab) The only thing that I made a point to change was the size and I made it 352x240
Advanced tab) Video arranged method was set to Center (custom size) and a size of 352x240
System tab) I changed Stream type to Mpeg-1 VideoCD

I hope this helps! Again this will only help people that had the same three lotr tt avi files with ac3 audio!

I've been having a similar problem converting a video (S.P.R) to a (S)VCD/DVD (anything) compatible format. I could not seem to get any audio out of it.

I had tried absolutely everything, Vdub,TmpEnc, BeSweet, DivFix, avi2wav, SoundForge, Nuendo2, Wavelab,..and on and on (outside of recording the stereo mix as the movie played) in order to extract the audio from this perfectly playable (MPC, DivX player etc..) DivX AC3-5.1CH avi. They either crashed, hung, gave various errors or just output a silent audio track.

Okay,..answering my own post here, but I think I figured it out.

                      Use Avi2Wav

to save the .wav file. Change the file extension to .ac3

and use BeSweet with the AC3Machine front-end (makes things simpler) to
                      fix it.

I tried with pretty much every version of VirtualDub(mod) and Nandub I could find and had no luck, so if anyone is having the same trouble, give this a try.

                      good luck,

My dvd player is part of my home theater system. It is 5 channels. So it would be great if I would be able to use all 5, instead of just stereo. So i would like to use ac3. Is there anyway to use nero to burn avi files w/the audio without spending hours on little steps before you even burn the file. I also don't want the extra files on my HD, so encoding first, then burining is annoying. I would just like to use nero to encode/burn in all one step. Also, how can i set the format to display in (i think that this is the right ratio) 16:9, for widescreen tv? Thanks

Why is this whole thread getting so confusing? Why convert to AC3, or manually extract audio and rename, and/or go through even more confusing steps?

Decompressor.exe (decomp.zip in the above link) is a great piece of software! It loads your avi, and creates a new avi with uncompressed audio (adding a _pcm to the filename automatically).
Use it to create an avi that has uncompressed audio, and load that file into tmpgenc.
                              Nothing could be easier.

Now if you INSIST on preserving the 5.1 audio, then you're going to have to learn the steps, and take the time to get it right.
Go ahead and load the avi into Nerovision Express and enjoy the 2 chan audio, out of sync, blocky video, annoying bitrate, and the 12+hours it takes Nero to finally burn a disk.

But what if you what to retain the 6 channels?

How easy it it to just use Nandub and rename the file extension?
