what are the codecs i need?

ok, so im new to this digital video stuff. now, i noticed that there are a load of diferent types of files (avi,divx,mpeg4.. etc) this , however, got me somewhat confused. it seems like i need a diferent type of codec for each movie i get, and honestly, i grow tired of looking for them.
So this is what i'm asking:
Can anyone give me a list of the basic codecs i will need most frequently, and maybe also a place where i can check for new versions and keep up to date with development??
