    Converting XP Media Center files

Am brand new to dvd recording. Have Windows XP Media Center.
Can only display recorded TV files on my computer.
Would like to burn these files to dvd, but think they need decoding first.
Need to know what decoding software will do this?
    Thanks

Is that a particular codec? or file extension (e.g. *.dvr_ms)

If it is a dv codec, and plays on your PC, try loading it in Virtualdubmod or Virtualdub and converting it to a format of your choice (such as xvid/divx). Or CCE/ TMPGEnc if you want to convert to mpeg-1/mpeg-2

          I will try your suggestion.
I don't know if it is a codec. It appears to be the suffix used by MS, making it proprietart I guess.
I have to try to convert this to a format which can be burned to a dvd so that it can play in my dvd player and show on my tv.
          Thanks

            Hi Batman
Downloaded Virtualdub, ran a dvr_ms recording and got message:
MS patented format ASF. This is copywrite and patent protected.
So I will have to record TV programs in a friendlier format.
Have you any software suggestion for recording?
            Thanks for your support.

Virtualdub v 1.3 has the capability to edit asf files, this capability was removed in subsequent releases due to legal concerns.

Try that version out. Does your recording software allow you to capture in another less restrictive format or export to say avi or mpeg?

                Hi
                Will try 1.3
No dvr-ms is the only format.
                Thanks

                  Hi Batman
Virtualdub 1.3 appears to be non-existent. All traces have been removed.
                  Have you any sources?

This site explains other methods for converting dvr-ms files:

The Microsoft mediacentre faq's however imply that the dvr-ms format files cannot be converted at this time.

                      Thanks Batman,
Just read your message. Will certainly update. The bottom line is still non conversion of the format.
                      Thanks again
