Presuming you are creating a compressed .avi...have you set up the codec correctly?

AND have you set the audio and video settings to "direct stream copy"?

Asuming you are trying to convert dat files from a video CD you should use VCDGear to convert the dat to mpg first. Then convert in VirtualDub.

          Dat To avi... virtual Dub

No need to convert first to mpg, just do the following,

          1: install divx codec.
2: put audio to full processing in virtualdub, and set the compression to ur liking i.e. mp3.
3: put video to full processing in virtualdub, and set compression to ur liking i.e. divx 5 usually encoding quality of 4000 bitrates is quite small and quite good.
4: save ur file as avi...happy encoding.
