Avi 2 DivX with VirtualDub - Problem?

I am trying to convert a 50gig avi file to divx using virtualdub. The program crashes after I start it. I dont think it like's the divx codec - 4.12. Is there another way to convert the avi file to divx?

Use the divx 3.11 alpha and a newer verion of virtual dub and wait till it loads cause the avi file is too big

I already installed the divx4 beta. And converts just fine. The problem is, the file size is much larger than divx 4.12. And I'm trying to compress it down to 650mgs. The divx 4.12 codec would be great if they could get it to work with virtualdub. It seems virtualdub is the only program around which can do avi 2 divx. Is this true? Do u guys think if I converted it to a vob file then used flaskmpg to convert it divx would that work?

      Thanks for all your help,
      Josh

I'm curious to know two things:

        1) How did you wind up with a 50Gig .AVI (Certainly it can only be a TOTALLY [video and audio] uncompressed file)?

        2) Does this humongous file play properly?

The big file was obtained by capturing off a video which is 4 hours long. Using a capture card and premiere to capture it. I don't have problems with playback cause im using a p41.8ghz with 523mg rdram on win2000 with 80gig hd. It opens up fine in virtualdub. I need to get this done to 650mgs using divx. Any ideas?
