I have AviSynth 2 and it says mpeg2dec.dll (or similar) is not a AviSynth V1.0 plug in. Should I get rid of AviSynth 2 and get 1 again?

Try and make sure you have the latest (corresponding) dll's and the latest version of AVISYNTH (v.2.5 I think).

NO, there is absolutly no reason to do that.

On the other hand here is a couple of reasons why you should not uninstall first:

If you are using the pro paid version, this might acctually be very bad. Since you would have to reregister, if you uninstall the previous version. This is not needed when you overwite anything above 5.01 with anything above 5.01.

And I suspect that the chance of messing up the vfw registry settings is also significantly higher, if you uninstall first. This primarily applies to WinXP users.
Donate your idle CPU time for something usefull.

Divx 5.05 should automatically add/change/remove the neccesary files of previous divx 5.xx installations so as KHP and other have said uninstalling divx 5.xx is not neccesary if you want to install divx 5.05.
