    DivX3-like Artifact on DVD?

Just saw this interesting s-h-i-t-like effect on a DVD show. I took a snapshot of that frame and cropped it down to the specific area.

Does anyone have a good guess of what could have possibly caused this? As far as I know, MPEG-2 compressions do not cause this and I doubt very much the source came from a DivX3-encoded original (the picture, except for this 'phenomenon', is very good as one would expect for a DVD).

p.s. You may need to zoom into the picture to clearly see the artifact.

This thread was not meant for anyone to 'help' me at all anyway. It was more meant for the picture to be shared and viewed by others. Comments and thoughts are welcome, of course.

I wonder if khp knows something about this. He would be among those few who possess extensive knowledge on video-related stuff.

What DVD is it? Is it a commercial or made by an individual?

          Some cheap taiwanese DVD.

The picture is great though (and makes the DVD very well-worth the money), but this is the first time I have seen an artifact like this. I have viewed heaps of other discs from the same manufacturer and they had no problem whatsoever. Talk about rare...

Is it the same if u rip the vob to hdd and view in DVD2AVI?

I have seen artifacts on DVD sources before but not as bad as that i must admit. MPEG2 compression is far from perfect but that image u posted is strange alright.

Wonder what the original source was?

I have the movie ripped to HDD and viewing it from there. I will see how it looks like under DVD2AVI. Thanks.

Edit: The artifacts exist on DVD2AVI too.

If you ask me them artifacts are unacceptable for a DVD nowadays.
                  Interesting find anyhow.

                      Symptom of poor mastering.
                      Seems your not alone Enchanter
