    MP4 / video truncating

Hi everyone.. I am wondering if anyone has a suggestion for my problem:

I have an Mpeg4 video file for streaming that is hosted on my website.. Currently, the file is 9mb , and the video has a "letter box" effect on it.. So a good 50% of the height is not being used and therefore is a waste of space.

I am wondering if anyone knows of any utilities that would allow me to import my video and tell it to truncate the video so that only the areas with actual video data will be included into a new file. (in other words, pixel X0,Y25 would be the start, X100,Y75 would be the end).

Something like that.. anyone have any ideas??

More than likely your Mpeg4 video has started out as anamorphic aspect 16:9. When a 16:9 ratio video is to be shown on standard 4:3 (full screen) TV/VDU screens it is either letter-boxed (the resolution is virtually re-sized downwards to accomodate the width and black bars are introduced top and bottom) or it is clipped at the edges. In the case of your video it is the former. I doubt if you could effectively re-structure your clip without access to an editing package (eg: Premiere) and even then the clipping will not turn out as you desire: there is likely to be distortion. I am not into designing Web Pages but if I could make a suggestion....If you need the space that is being taken up by the "polar bars" you could use an overlay mask (upper layer) with a cut-out the size of the video, minus the bars. You then transfer everything but the video to the upper layer. You can do this sort of thing in Photoshop, or Paint Shop Pro.

Actually, there was an actual wide screen effect added to this video clip to eliminate areas of the video that weren't wanted... (the focus of the video was in the center of the screen).. I am primarily looking for a way to eliminate the black upper and area parts just to conserve file size.

You could try using the croping filter in virtualdub to remove the borders.

          virtual dub

As far as I can see, Virtual Dub is a PC product. I am a mac OSX user.. any software on that platform that can accomplish this?
