    questions about vcds (mpeg fles)

Even if i have some time in this, this thread would like like a newbie, but i have had some quests. about vcds.

1- I have been using Tmpeg to create mpeg-1 files out of avi files, is there a better tool for doing this?
2- Usually mpeg files get bigger with the conversion, but i dont know if the rate is okay (8 mins movie, 88 mbs)?
3- Is a vcd able to play several files in one cd?
4- I own a rca dvd player, is it capable of play svcds?
5- Is there a way to compress a mpeg file?

Thanx to all for your atte.

(I'm assuming that all of your references to "MPEG-1" really are "MPEG-1 VideoCD")

"1- I have been using Tmpeg to create mpeg-1 files out of avi files, is there a better tool for doing this?"

In my opinion, no... (Although I'm sure others have differing opinions)

"2- Usually mpeg files get bigger with the conversion, but i dont know if the rate is okay (8 mins movie, 88 mbs)?"

The norm for this format is approximately 1Mb per minute, so 88Mb for 8 minutes is not out of the ordinary...

"3- Is a vcd able to play several files in one cd?"

You CAN include more than one MPEG-1 VideoCD file onto a CD-R burned as a VCD. they will play consecutively. Additionally, if you're using NERO, if you place a short delay time between the files, they should then be selectable by pressing the number keys on your standalone DVD player's remote.

"4- I own a rca dvd player, is it capable of play svcds?"

To determine the capabilities/limitations of your specific brand and model number standalone DVD player, go to:

    http://www.dvdrhelp.com./

"5- Is there a way to compress a mpeg file?"

What are you trying to accomplish? (You DON'T ever want to risk "zipping" or "raring" a video file. When you decompress the file, it may no longer be functional)

hi, sorry to bother you all again, specially you setarip, but i tried to make a vcd after you answer me the first time, and it was a disaster, I´ll tell you what i did.
First of all i passed al my avi files to mpeg-1 using Tmpeg, after doing this i burn my 8 mpeg files into a cd with easy cd creator 5 basic (very old i know) in a speed of 8x, when i tried to play it in my dvd player, this didnt recognize the cd... am i doing something wrong?
            Thanx for your atte.

              1) "First of all i passed al my avi files to mpeg-1 using Tmpeg"

You should make certain that you've set the mode to "MPEG1-VideoCD" and NOT "plain vanilla" "MPEG-1"

"i burn my 8 mpeg files into a cd with easy cd creator 5 basic (very old i know)"

You should make certain that you are burning your CD-R as "VideoCD" - Does this "very old" version provide that option?

It's not MPEG1-VIDEOCD-compliant. It could have a higher video bitrate than 1,150Kbps. It might be of a higher resolution than 352x240 (NTSC) or 352x288 (PAL). For all I know, it could be an MPEG-2 file...

"you didnt tell me if i can download nero from the web..."

Simply do a Google search for "NERO Burning ROM"...
