    reading DVD-rs

no such thing as a stupid question right?

do you need a DVDrom to view written DVD-r data CDs once burned? (I'm not talking about actual DVD movies, but just DVD-rs with data on them).

Yes, if the media is DVD (DVDROM, DVDRAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, or DVD+RW)...

(There is no such thing as "DVD-r data CD")

You need a DVD reader (that's either a DVDROM or a DVD burner) in order to read ANY type of DVD...
