how to compress uncompressed avi

avi with VBR decompressed with decompress v 1.4. but now these files are larger than originals. can i compress them? what software to use?

Open it in Virtual Dub (and depending on what size you want, (change the bitrate) and what codec you want (find these optitons under the video part) and what audio compression, and then save it.

1. Load uncompressed AVI in Virtualdub.

2. Set Video tab to Full Processing Mode (or Normal/Fast Recompress, if you do not intend to use VD's filters).

3. Select a codec with which to compress the video (the DivX and/or XviD codecs are typically used) and configure accordingly.

4. If your source contains audio:
a. Check Direct Stream Copy under the Audio tab, if you do not want to process/compress the audio stream.
b. Otherwise, check Full Processing Mode under the Audio tab and perform similar steps as in Step (3).

5. Once all have been configured, go to File -> Save as AVI and give a name to the new file.

something's wrong. new file size is almost the same as old, uncompressed file...

I guess that you are asking this because you either want to get rid of the varaible bitrate in audio or you want to recompress the
file to a smaller size.....

in order to be of good help can you load the decompessed avi into virtual dub ... hit file information in file drop down menue

post here everything it says and then describe what exactly you want to achieve

yes it seems here is the problem I guess you want to make a quality file video and audio

do the following.....
load the video into virtual dub....
-->video dropdown menue-->direct stream copy

-->audio dropdown menue---> hit full processing mode-->choose conversion---> set to
change 48000hz to 44100 hz.... hit ok.

-->audio dropdown menue--->hit compression--- choose a "mp3" codec..... set it o 128 bits per second or lower.... then
hit ok... then refer to the file dropdown menue....
---> here hit save as avi and save the file under a new filename....this should decrease your file significantly

the normal setting ( I see that your video is 12 minutes long)
would be arond 890 kbits in video setting and 128 kbits in audio setting (mp3 codec) this would make a video and audiofile of about 90 mb


if you have no mp3 codec, install the radium mp3 codec....

i've installed radium, but it isn't in virtualdub codec list. installed also lame codec. but it's the same thing. what's wrong?
