Try Control Panel>>folders>>file types and scroll down and change the association of MPEG's to PowerDVD (or Windows Media Player...if you have PowerDVD installed).

As long as PowerDVD is installed WMP will play your MPEG2....we're guessing you somehow uninstalled PowerDVD.

            thanks for the replies guys

            i have tried reinstalling powerdvd
and i have powerdvd now in my system
and WMP does play mpeg2 but it does not use poweddvd codec
it use ahead mpeg video decoder
and for a reason i want to use powerdvd codec
            instead ahead codec
the ahead codec came from nero vision express
and i don't want to uninstall nero vision express
i just want to WMP to use powerdvd codec

              maxima,

Why don't you use PowerDVD itself to play the MPEG-2 files?

WMP IS using the PowereDVD codec...in a convoluted way...it's going to NeroVE which uses the codec. You can uninstall the VE...make sure all associations open with WMP, and when you reinstall VE and it asks you what programs it should open reply "none" (outside Nero proprietary files, of course).

first of all nero ve didn't ask anything
                  and associate anything during installation
                  try install nero ve yourself
and nero has its own codec to play mpeg file
which i think the quality is worse than powerdvd
i dont think its an association problem

enchanter yeah i just can use powerdvd to play
mpeg-2 files but it ll be more convenient if
i can use its codec in WMP =)

                      i had the same problem.

you can unregister the nero codec,
go to DOS Command Prompt and type :

                      regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\DSFilter\NDParser.ax"

                      regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\DSFilter\NeAudio.ax"

                      regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\DSFilter\NeFileSrc.ax"

                      regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\DSFilter\NeRender.ax"

                      regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\DSFilter\NeVideo.ax"

                        Hello,

                        Thanx for the hacks.

I have run the commands and rebooted, but when I try and play an Mpeg2 file through Media Player it is still using the damn "Nero Mpeg Video Decoder".

I even tried again to reinstall my Mpeg2 codec for the hundredth time but no go. Still doesnt work.

Were the 5 hacks the only ones required, did you do anything else special?

                        Thanx,
                        Waz.

                          Hey,

I have taken a closer look at the contents of the Nero Filters folder and found that the file causing the problem is:
                          "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\DSFilter\NeMPG.ax"
I renamed it temporily and svcds play fine with my old Elecard mpeg3 codec.

Thanx for all your help, I wouldnt have been able to fix it without your help...!!!

                          Waz.

                            This is the Cure

Hi, I had exactly the same issue as you with the Nero codec being used when I didn't want it to be! I renamed the file nevideo.ax to OLDnevideo.ax (although I'm sure you can call it anything you want), then rebooted. From then on my files were played using the PowerDVD codec as before. I am wondering though, how you knew that the Nero codec was being used? I did because of an error message I kept getting stating nevideo.ax being erroneous. I would like to know. If you have the time please mail me at pbar@dsl.pipex.com and let me know how you got on. Thanks, Paul.

i use ActiveMovie ActiveX Control to play my media files
i click on Properties and Advanced, i can see the codec being used

if you want to see ALL codecs and filters being used, use GraphEdit and click on File / Render Media File
