WMP freezing problems (a new one!!)

Search the net high and low to see if anyone has answered this problem before, but to no avail. You are my only hope.

    i run XP Pro, P4 2GHz, 512MB Ram. 64MB 3D Prophet Kyro video card

    Also have WMP v 9.0, DirectX 9.0

Anyway getting to the problem. Whenever i try and play divX3 files they freeze all the time and are very choppy. i have tried to see if they are corrupt in DivFix but there are 0 problems. ALL my divX 3 avi files have the same problem. However i don't have any problems playing DivX 4 avi's. I have tried just about every codec pack, installing them in many different ways. My divX 4 codec doesn't play my divx 3 files as i clicked 'no'.

    I have tried:
    Nimo 5.0.8
    3.11 alpha
    divx pro 5.1 bundle
    3ivx

and even have anti freeze installed. But every time the problem persists. I just have to attribute it to WMP. But having tried all the DivX players, WMP classic, WinDVD, i still have the same freezing problem.

Basically there are black rectangular blocks that appear on the picture that effectively freeze up. The audio is unnafected, but that's to be expected. When i lower the hardware acceleration to 'disable all direct draw and direct x' the freezing problem goes away. But this really isn't a solution because it makes all my other applications crash.

Can someone please come to my rescue. This problem has been around for a few years for me. The vein in my forehead is throbbing painfully. If i don't fix this problem soon my computer will be thrown from my window and I will have to be rushed to hospital with a brain anurism!!!!!!!

The freeware you find on this site (BSPlayer) often plays files when WMP refuses...and when it won't it usually tells you why (ie. "this file is corrupt"). Don't know if it'll help your DivX3 problem...

Thanks for the response. Having downloaded the player, i;'ve tried it on all my files and get an error message 'overlay failed'. What exactly does this mean?? Is there anything i can do to solve the problem??
