how to:TMPGEnc from avi to mpeg2 but with sound

Hi All.

New to all this stuff so please excuse my ignorance.
I have downloaded a trial version of TMPGEnc and have converted an 736mb avi film to mpeg2 and video works fine, but I have no sound with film. Is there a setting I have to set for this ??

1) Load the .AVI file into VirtualDub (or any of its variants) or NanDub

2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box


The audiostream is probably in either .AC3 format or Variable Bitrate MPEG Layer 3 (VBR .MP3).

If it proves to be .AC3:

In TMPGEnc, under the "Environmental Settings" "VFAPI plugin" tab rightclick on the "Direct Show Multimedia Reader" and increase to the highest priority. This will enable TMPGEnc to accept a properly encoded .AVI with .AC3 audio for input...


If it proves to be VBR:

Converting .AVIs with VBR-MP3 Audio

Simply use NanDub or VirtualDubMOD (Different than standard VirtualDub), to save the audio stream as an Uncompressed PCM (WAV) file as follows:
1) Load your original .AVI into NanDub

2)Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copy"

3) Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode" (NanDub only -For VirtualDubMOD>"Streams>"Stream list">>rightclick on the listed audiostream and then select "Full Processing Mode")
From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Compression" and choose "No compression(PCM)" (NanDub only - For VirtualDubMOD>"Streams>"Stream list">>rightclick on the listed audiostream and then select "Compression" and choose "No compression(PCM)")

4) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save WAV" (In VIrtualDubMOD, "Save WAV" is located under the "Streams" drodpown menu) (Enter a new filename with a ".WAV" extender).Click on "OK"

5) Then save the .AVI as a silent .AVI (NanDub - set "Audio" to "No audio" after you've saved the WAV file. - For VirtualDubMOD>"Streams>"Stream list">>click on the listed audiostream and then select "Disable").

6) Open TMPGEnc and FIRST "drag and drop" the silent .AVI onto it, then do the same with the .WAV file.

First here are my file info from within NanDub...

Vide Stream
frame size,fps(us per frame): 576X320 23.976fps (41708us)

decompressor: xvid mpeg-4 codec

Audio stream
sampling rate: 48000hz
channels: 2 stereo
sample precision: 0-bit
compression: fraunhoter lls mpeg layer-3 codec
preload skew: 1 samples (0.00s)
# of frames 250996
min/avg/max/total frame size: 96/415/480 (101957k)

I did as you said based on the audiostream being mp3 audio.

I saved the avi file (silent) and this file is ok, length and quality.
But my audio (wav) file is only 981 kb in length which only plays for 5 seconds.

I did just as you said above

I don't know why that happened but, be that as it may, use VirtualDubMOD (different than standard VirtualDub) as follows:

1) Load the .AVI file into VirtualDubMOD (a different program than the standard VirtualDub)

2) From the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Direct Stream Copy"

3) From the "Streams" dropdown menu, select "Stream List" - and rightclick on the audio stream, then select "Full Processing Mode" - then click on "OK"

4) Save with a new filename

Bingo !
I messed with the audio settings in NanDub and changed the full processing to direct stream copy and now the wav file is 101,957kb

Will now drag and drop both files into TMPGEnc and fingers crossed i'll get sound as well as video in the resulting file.

I'm fairly certain that this WON'T yield the desired results.

If I'm correct, please use the procedures I've provided for using VirtualDubMOD...

This gave me sound ok but out of sync.!

So I did as you suggested in your last post and this worked a treat.

Now it's on to menus
