    Avi or not to Avi

    OK here is my conundrum.......

I have 2 avi files, similar in size (one is 286mb, the other 279Mb) both should be the same length of 30 mins but when converting to MPEG (PAL for UK use!)using TMPGEnc Plus comes out 2 different sizes on the Bitrate Setting:-

The 238 MB one shows that that it is 30 mins long as it should be and will fit fine on a normal VCD, but the other 286 one shows it is 79 mins long??????

Any one that can help with an explanation would be most welcome!

Do the following for each of the two .AVI files:

    1) Load the original video file into VirtualDub (or one of its many variants) or NanDub

    2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

    3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (BOTH video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

More Avi or not to Avi

This is what i get from Virtual dub

      279 MB File:-

      Video Stream
      Frame 384x208, 25,000fps(40000ps)
      Length 443746 frames (29:09:85)
      Decompressor Xvid Mpeg -4 Codec
      Number of Key Fr 360
      Min/avg/max/total
      Key 909/15139/24867 (5323k)
      Min/avg/max/total
      Delta 50/5623/29392(238284k)
      Data Rate 1140 Kbps (0.42%overhead)

      Audio

      Sampling Rate 44100hz
      Channels 2 (stereo)
      Sample Precision N/A
Compression Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer 3 Codec
Layout 45 Chunks (0.48s Pre Load)
      Length 34997812 Samples (29:09:89)
      Min/avg/Max
      Total Frame Size 502/990/9558 (44k)
      Data Rate 160kbps (2.37% overhead)

      286 MB File

      Video Stream
      Frame 512x288, 25,000fps(40000ps)
      Length 43866 frames (29:14:64)
      Decompressor Xvid Mpeg -4 Codec
      Number of Key Fr 478
      Min/avg/max/total
      Key 1657/20459/36849 (9551k)
      Min/avg/max/total
      Delta 114/5756/26482(243890k)
      Data Rate 1183 Kbps (0.40%overhead)

      Audio

      Sampling Rate 48000hz
      Channels 2 (stereo)
      Sample Precision N/A
Compression Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer 3 Codec
Layout 83 Chunks (0.01s Pre Load)
      Length 31196064 Samples (28:57:74)
      Min/avg/Max
      Total Frame Size 96/530/960 (44k)
      Data Rate 144kbps (4.33% overhead)

While trying to open this file I got the following warning sign!

Virtualdub has detected an improper vbr audio encoding in the soure Avi file and will rewrite the audio header with standard CBR values during processing for better compatibility. This may introduce up to 18561 ms of skew from the video stream. If this is unacceptable, decompress the entire audio stream to an umcompressed WAV file and recompress with a constant bitrate encoder ???????

      Help???????

        "279 MB File:-

        A) Unless you've got a typo in the above, somehow, the number of frames is extremely overstated as 443,746 frames. It should be 43,746 frames

        B) The second video contains a Variable Bitrate ("VBR") .MP3 audiostream, which TMPGEnc cannot process properly (and is probably causing the misinterpretation of file duration. Modify this file as follows:

Using VirtualDubMOD to Convert "VBR" .MP3 to Uncompressed .WAV

        1) Load the .AVI file into VirtualDubMOD (a different program than the standard VirtualDub)

        2) From the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Direct Stream Copy"

        3) From the "Streams" dropdown menu, select "Stream List" - and rightclick on the audio stream, then select "Full Processing Mode" - then click on "OK"

        4) Save with a new filename
