    TV and AVI

What is the best way to get a TV show from the TV to my computer and make it an AVI (Divx) file with the absolute highest sound/picture quality and resolution? Any help at all is appreciated.

First you need a capture card in order to capture the show from TV into your computer.

Like an ATI All in Wonder. Then what? What are the capture programs and stuff?

Google for VirtualVCR and AVT2000 ... both are DirectShow based so they will work with most capture card drivers, and both support matroska container if you plan to capture longer shows ....
Support the future of audio and video encoding, matroska as open standard container format and Gstreamer as open source, x-platform multimedia platform - Contact us on Corecodec, the concentric circles of audio and video, or on IRC.CORECODEC.COM #matroska ; for best viewing matroska file use The Core Media Player ( TCMP )

You can also use external hardware devices like the Pinnacle DVC-150 or Canopus. Each card/device comes with it's own recommended software...and has its own idiocentric quirks.
