audio decompressor problems

Hello everyone, i'm not to digital forum, and to my computer as well. I am having a problem decompressing audio files. I have a movie that is avi, and I want to encode it to an MPEG1 or 2 format. I open TMPGE and try to encode it, but it says I need an audio file. I try to use virtual dub to split the audio and video, and it tells me that a decompressor could not be found. I don't really know what to do with it now. The movie has sound before I use TMPGE just for the record. When I use vDub, I go to file-open avi, then AUDIO-full compression mode and then conversion. Next in conversion I use 44100hz, precision-no change, and channels-no change. I got these settings from a buddy and he said they where right. Please help. TIA

1) Do either of the programs name a SPECIFIC audio codec or "tag"?

2) Download and use GSpot to determine what audio codec is required

3) Download and install:

A) .MP3 codec

B) .AC3 codec/filter

How about answering my question, to wit:

Do either of the programs name a SPECIFIC audio codec or "tag"?

NO

NEITHER OF THE PROGRAMS HAVE NAME A SPECIFIC AUDIO CODEC OR TAG. WHERE DO I LOOK TO FIND THAT INFO?

I did say that that's the reason why I tried to use Virtual dub to split audio and video. But it tells me no decompressor could be found
