how can i take a single frame of my video clip and save it in an image file format?

    hey,

i wanted to take a still shot out of my video sequence and save it in image file format (i don't know, like TIFF or something?). i know you can chop out frames using virtualdub, which is what i've been doing, but can you save a file as something other than AVI?

is there any other program (that's free) that can do it?

If you allready know how to use VirtualDUB, you should also use it to save a single image.
Go to the frame you want to save, press "ctrl-1" and the image is in the clipboard. Now you can start an image-editor like paint (included in windows) and insert it by pressing "shift-ins".
Or you delete all frames except the one (or more) you want to save and use "file -> save image sequence...".
    don't trust in guides

Or, while playing the video in Windows Media Player, hold down the Alt key and press the PrintScreen key. This will send a copy to your clipboard. Then from within a "paint" or graphics program, select "Paste". Save your image in the desired format (JPG, etc.).
