Can't play AVI/WMV but can play MPEG

HELP!!!!

I seem to be only able to play movie formats and not video formats.
When I try to play AVI WMV WMA my PC freezes completely, but Mpegs work fine. This happens in both Windows Media Player and in Real Player.

Can anybody give me some insight as to what the problem might be. Or at least where I can begin to look.

You might want to try reinstalling your codecs (which seem to be messing up with your system).
