    New DVD won't play

I can play older DVDs (Hoosiers, Jerimiah Johnson) with PowerDVD5 just fine but when it comes to playing new ones (...Nemo, Pirates of the Carribean) they just won't play

I have played "Shrek" and "Fellowship of the Rings"... they played just fine as well but now they won't play either. what gives.

Old ones work fine, new ones won't, medium age ones did but now won't

    ??????

    Any Thoughts??

    PII
    400mghz
    384 mg memory
    Win 2000

    Thanks

I guess... I get em at Wal-Mart or wherever, not overseas or via the world wide web.

have you run any kinda region free tools? does yer video card have a TV_Out? Do they work in any other players (Windows Media Player, BS Player, Zoom Player etc...)?

Is PowerDVd giving off any kinda errors? Macrovision errors? screns saying this disc canot play do to "error here"? Is it playing sound but just a black screen? Any drive clicking?

I load the NEW DVD and a little light comes on on the player and I hear it kinda clicking. At that point I know it is not gonna play. I wait for a while, a minute or so and the DVD pops out.

I load an OLD DVD, the light comes on, PowerDVD comes on the screen and the movie starts to play.

It's like there is something that keeps it from recognizing a "new" DVD

I will try to get it to load in another program but it seems to be kinda locked up until it is ejected.

I have no region tools or a TV out

I looked around for new drivers for my player but it is a Compaq machine and they are HP now and the web site wasn't much help.

The only thing I can think of that is new is my anti-virus program, went from Norton 2000 to Norton 2003. Had to or I couldn't get "live update"

Norton PIRATES! but that is another story.

              Thank You!

The drive clicking is not a good sign. It means it realy has nothing to do with any software on yer system (Operating System, DVD player, or drivers)

If the drive is phisicly unable to read the discs you should invest in a cleaning kit and give the dive a good cleaning and see if it does any good.

I brought up drive clicking becose this is what happened to me and my DVD drive. Some DVDs worked fine but others clicked and wouldent read and then as time passed ones that did work eventualy started to also click and not work until eventualy nothing worked and the drive was dead.

The drive wouldent be a Panasonic-A05 or a vareant would it?

I just ran "region free" to no avail.
it is a compaq dvd player
it doesn't really "click" it's more like a couple of "ticks" like it is trying to read it but fails, then simply ejects

the ticking is caused from the laser lifting up and checking if theres a disc on the tray. if it detects a disc it'll stay up. If it cant read a disc it'll drop back down. the click/tick is caused from the laser jumping up and down desporatly trying to read the disc.

Go pick up a cleaning kit. You can get one at pretty much any drug store for like $5. A cd rom cleaning kit wil work just fine in a dvd drive as well if you have one laying around (assuming the drive can also read CD media as well as DVD)
