Yes, there are MPEG options, but the options available are dependent upon the capture source. I have no options (they are all preset & disabled) with the Studio DC-10plus capture card. The compression format for audio shows to be PCM. I'll checkout that TMPGenc program.

    Thanks.

PS - If I were to replace my capture card, which would you recommend?

No need to do that if the video quality is , as you say, good. If you must use Studio8 to capture so be it...but after capture render it as a MPEG2 and you'll see file size drop dramtically with little discernable loss in quality. PCM audio is usually fairly small, and doesn't need to be converted....

        Troy,
I stumbled across this forum a few weeks ago looking for answers on how to increase video quality for various sites I contribute to. I was afraid of having to spend $1k or more to get a camcorder to produce results where I want.

After coming across your thread, I took a chance (after I researched you on this board a bit more) and invested ~$200 by buying a TRV350 camcorder off of Ebay. I did some test captures from Hi 8 video tapes and was FLOORED!!!!! The quality jump was huge and I can now use Vegas 5.0 to do all my capturing instead of the Dazzle bridge through Moviestar then into Vegas n whatnot.

If this isn't a budget way to make high quality video's, then I don't know what is! Your information has been HUGE and for anybody curious about this setup.....GET IT!!!

        Thanks troy!!

Hello everyone. Im fairly new to the analog side of things and had a few questions regaurding the Hi8 to MPEG quality. I was wondering if its cost effective to get my Sony CCD-V8AF some new battries($85), a analog to digital converter ($100), Some Hi8 tapes ($25). Im going to be making a DVD (as pro as i can get for the $) with heavy editing. Is all that money worth spending on an old machine, or should I just buy a mini dv camera with a firewire/usb out? I cant spend more than 300 for it all. and if you could, point me in the direction i need to be. Im looking for a MiniDV camera with:
          external mic jack
          firewire/usb (prefer firewire)
at or more than 40x zoom
any suggestions can be sent to
