MPEG2 .m2v to DivX?

Hello,

I have tried using a couple of programs to convert my MPEG 2 video only files (filename extension .m2v) to a DivX .avi but have thus far been unsuccessful. I was wondering what tool is generally recommended to convert these types of files. I know that the files are not bad, seeing as I can play them in WinDVD and Windows Media Player without a problem.

Also, I have a PCM .wav file that goes with each of the videos. What program would be recommended to add the audio onto the video? Should I do this BEFORE the MPEG2->DivX conversion or AFTER?

Any answers to any of the above questions are GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

You could use VirtualDubMOD (Different than standard VirtualDub) to accomplish both...

O.K. I got VirtualDubMod and tested it out converting one of my MPEG-2 videos and it works. I was just wondering on your opinion about which codec I should use to compress the movies in. I am looking for extremely good quality (file size is second to the quality, but still somewhat important). I was just wondering what you prefer with your experiences with digital video as a whole.

Also, is it recommended that I compress the audio into either MP3 or OGG Vorbis before I join it with the video, or is it generally left in it's wav form (I am merely inquiring as to what is customarily done, as I am ignorant in the subject of joining video and audio files)? And, should the audio be added onto the MPEG-2 videos or the final compressed form (whatever the codec may be)?

I wuld personaly use the latest XviD codec and either OGG or MP3 audio. either is fine for me and both are extreamly common but OGG will be a bit smaller sence you can acheve nearly the same quality as MP3 at a lower bitrate MP3 128 and OGG 96 is about the same sound quality. I would also use an MKV contanor over AVI or OGM.

If yer original audio is not god afull huge you realy can keep it like it is (I would compress it though).

I use VirtualDubMod to compress the video and cdex to compress the audio then mux them together in MKV later. Dont change the framerate on the video though as in this method of doing it the result would be a video that plays a diffrent speed then the audio and they would break sync.

Yes but you will need to create a .d2v project file using DVD2AVI which will allow you to open it in GordianKnot.

I would also recommend ogg audio and its counterpart container format. Also i prefer XviD.

Well here is my problem : i can not open these files in dvd2avi and all i get is a green window. I tried many times but that was useless. I tried doing that with the dvd vobs before that .
so is there any program like dvd2avi that i can use ?

Have you tried different versions of dvd2avi, not just one? If not do so.
