As far as I am aware there are only Video Recorder/DVD Player combinations at present. However, there are standalone DVD Recorders which can connect to VCRs.
I don't know about the others available now but a pro point for the Philips over the Panasonic is Philips can use ReWritables.This isn't a learning curve ... this is b****y mountaineering!Comment

If you already have a v.c.r. (as most people do), all you need is to buy a standalone dvd recorder for a 1 : 1 vhs to a dvd back-up.
You should check the spec.'s of such a recorder and what type of dvd blank discs it will record to. There are many more dvd player which play the -R discs, so many choose to buy a dvd recorder which will record to the -R discs.Rig :
