How to copy data backup image to a DVD?

How can I copy a system disk image to a DVD for backup? Or better split the image file into smaller ones and copy to several CDs? Please help. I am a newbie with DVD-just bought a DVD burner.
Should I format the DVD+RW before using it (I have to format CD-RW before I can use it)

By all means...practice with the RW until you feel comfortable. Your burner probably came with a number of burning software packages...and even the most austere burning package can make a DVD data disc for storage. My Sony came with Veritas "Record Now"...which is drag-and-drop simple.

I am quite experienced with CD-RW, but no experience with DVD-R/+RW. Where can I look for some user guide?
