Need a little help making DVDs from mpegs.

I am set up to record TV shows to my hard drive and then burn them to DVD. The problem I am having is that when I burn them it loses clearity. The mpeg I record it is very clear, but the DVD comes out looking like an old VHS tape.

I have been told to try using a uncompress avi format, but it still seems to be the same result. Hard drive space is not a issue,200gig just for my video work.

    Any suggestion?

I have tried Studio 8 but it locks up with mpeg2 files.Ulead works but thats where Im getting the bad transfer or what ever its doing.

Gforce FX 5950 Ultra video card.

    Thanks

If your mpeg is clear I wouldn't waste the time capturing to avi unless you want to do some editing. Try TMPGenc DVD Author (my favorite) to author your mpeg/s. Free 30 day trial. You can burn with TDA if running win 2k or win xp.

One set of procedures (other posters may/probably will suggest alternative methods) would be:

      1) If not already DVD-compliant, use "TMPGEnc" to convert the MPEG to compliant MPEG2-for-DVD format - Use "TMPGEnc's" DVD wizard/template to accomplish this (This step may not be necessary, if your MPEG-2 filies are already in DVD compliant format)

      2) Use "TMPGEnc DVD Author" (a different program than "TMPGEnc") to easily create the required additional DVD files and structure (and chapters and a menu, if you wish)

**If the combined filesize of the DVD "package" written to your hard drive is greater than 4.37Gb, use DVD Shrink (or similar) to compress

If your O/S is either Win2000 or WinXP, TMPGEnc DVD Author can also burn your DVD. Otherwise, use NERO to burn in "DVD-Video" mode
(As an alternative to "TMPGEnc DVD Author", you could use "DVDLab")

      Let us know of your success ;>}

From within "TMPGEnc" (Different than "TMPGEnc DVD Author") you can apply a sharpening filter...

Could my problem be that the kbs is set at 10000,I tried TMPGEnc DVD Author and it say something about my kbs being higher them that of a standard DVD at 8000?

                2) I'm fairly certain that "TMPGEnc DVD Author" (Different than "TMPGEnc") indicated that the combined video/audio bitrate was greater than 9,800Kbs, not 8,000 - and no, that's not the reason for the graininess...

Now I’m thinking that maybe the graininess is caused by the resolution that the program was recorded at. I recorded it at 720x480,does something funny happen during the compiling that would cause it to come out grainy looking? Should I try and capture it at a lower resolution then 720x480?

It's apparent that you're intent on ignoring my suggestion, to wit:

As I said before: From within "TMPGEnc" (Different than "TMPGEnc DVD Author") you can apply a sharpening filter...

Therefore, I'll post nothing further to this thread. Perhaps another poster will provide additional information/suggestions that you may heed...

I tried it and could not find anything about a filter that you are talking about.

Can you please post a link to the things you are telling me about?

Sorry,I am new to all this stuff for making DVDs.

Under the advanced tab, place a checkmark next to "Sharpen edge" and then doubleclick on the WORDS "Sharpen edge" - then select from the available options...
