    wmp problems

    Hi

I'm having some problems trying to play avi files with wmp9. I am able to play certain avi files once but after I close wmp9 or get a error and try to play the same file again, wmp9 crashes and I am unable to play the file again along with other different avi file. While other files play perfectly fine, some just won't play at all and keep crashing wmp. I have all the newest codecs insalled and have tried reinstalling the codecs and wmp. I've done a search for spyware and cleaned them out. I'm about down to my last resort where I'd have to reformat but I'd like to see if anyone here has any ideas as to what could be causing this problem.

    thx in advance.

Make your life simple and install good ol' reliable Windows Media Player v.6.4 (It's already hiiden on your hard drive), by doing the following:

    Desktop>>Start>>Run then type MPLAYER2.EXE

I have tried wmp 6.4, same result. I also forgot to mention they play perfectly in powerdvd and windvd.

sorry to second your post ... setarip.

        but my expierence shows....
do only display files that are encoded in *.wmv or *.wma
or *asf with windows media player 9
choose a decent player to decode *.avi movies
like ...BS player or MV2 player ...or best VLC....depending
        on your system.....

depending on the system... it is not so easy to get rid of
        WMP 9.....

"I also forgot to mention they play perfectly in powerdvd and windvd."

Are you SURE they're actually .AVIs - or perhaps they're actually MPEG-2 files...

just to mention.. It may be ...,since powerdvd and windvd have their own way of handling
direct show routines...,that the avis are displayed correctly with the fact that WMP9 does not handle them.
if cetza says that *.avi movies are the ones to cause
the trouble.... I am likley to believe that.....
of course you might be right with your assumption..also.!!

yep they are .avi's, ran them through gspot to make sure when this problem started. I just tried BS Player and everything seems to be working well. Guess I'll try the other 2 players and decide which one I like best. I suppose now I've seen the light and realize how crappy wmp9 really is. Again thanks for your help.
