    Hardware requirements for Video

Maybe I should have posted this in the Newbie's category but I thought I'd start here first.

I have been working with computers for more years than I care to mention but I'm fairly new to the use of computers for video purposes. I'm referring to video creation, editing and copying.

My question for this group is what is generally considered the minimum hardware, processor and storage capabilities needed for these tasks.

I have a digital camera and I would like to make DVD's from the home movies I have. I also would like to convert some VHS tapes I have to DVD format. And of course I'd like to copy some of my current DVD's for others to use.

I have an IOmega Super Drive DVD writer and a NVIDIA GEFORCE FX5200 graphics card. I also have 160 gigs of storage and 384 megs of ram. My concern is my processor, it is just a 500 Megahertz processor and that concerns me.

Most of my DVD,s have either failed in the editing process or the end result has contained digital interferance and or pauses and dropped frames.

Does anyone know of any accepted minimal requirements posted anywhere. Or can you let me know what hardware you have used successfully.

    Thanks for any help.

First off, you're going to need a processor in the 1.6 Ghz range or better. I would say 2.0 and above. You'll also need more memory, at least 512. Finally, a firewire connection from your digital camera to your computer.

I have a P4 2.4C with hyperthreading enabled on a 800FSB. I only have 512MG in DDR3500, running in dual mode, but plan to double that soon. I have the NVIDIA FX5200 video card, Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card and a 160GB SATA drive that is ONLY for my video storage. I'm running two 80GB drives as C and D. My DVD burner is an 8X NEC 2500A. I have a firewire that I connect directly to my SONY Digital cameras. I can also use my camcorders as a pass through to my VCR for the tapes I want to convert to DVD. This allows me the best quality video and sound in real time, with no drop outs. What I'm looking for now, is maybe some better software. I'm using SONY's ImageMixer and Microsoft's Media Plus! video maker. That's my setup for converting my older 8mm family tapes. One of my SONY's plays the older tapes as well as digital. My other SONY is a minidvd model.

For backing up the DVDs I own, I use DVD Shrink and NERO 6 Ultra Edition. NERO also makes my DVD burning for my family videos a snap.
