    Repairing or reinstalling mpeg codex...

    My windows media player 9 and classic recently screwed up, and refuse to play mpeg movies correctly. I reinstalled wmp9, but the problem still persists. It just usually crashes instantly, a few seconds into the movie, or sometimes even a few minutes. Always with the same error, some ActiveMovie window something error...

    Anyone know what this might be, or how to fix it?

    What decoder is used...

    - Open the mpeg with mplayer2

    -> C:\Programs\Windows Media Player\mplayer2.exe

    - While playback right-click -> property's -> extended -> XXX

    -> XXX should be the decoder(s) for audio n' video

      If you're OS is Windows XP, simple perform a system restore to just before your problem started...

        I already restored it to a previous workable point but it still refuses to work.

        About the codex, it only says MPEG video decoder and MPEG sound decoder.

        Ran GSpot v2.21...
        "Warning: DirectShow crashed while attempting to render this file.

        This is usually due to damaged, misconfigured, conflicting, or poorly written codec drivers. It is possible, perhaps even likely, that other media players will crash when they attempt to play this file as well, as most of them will also use DirectShow. Although GSpot was able to intercept the crash, attempts to identify the codec which caused it have failed. Unfortunately, no additional information is available at this time."

        Media Player Classic 6.4.8.1 plays the files fine.. :S

          "Media Player Classic 6.4.8.1 plays the files fine.."

          Then don't drive yourself crazy about the poorly constructed WinMP9 - simply use "Classic"...

            The built in Windows Media Play classic doesnt run them. An outside downloaded Media Player Classic runs them. Its just I want my movies to work in WMP9. :S

              There is NO "built-in Media Player classic" - Media Player Classic is an independently developed freeware player.

              "Its just I want my movies to work in WMP9"

              You can't always get what you want...

                  IMHO mplayer2.exe is VASTLY superior to the silly new windows media player 9 crap that takes up 3/4 of your screen no matter what you're playing in it. Silly M$ software just gets worse & worse with every generation...

                    "I ment mplayer2.exe under C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player"

                    That is good ol' reliable (far more so than v.9) Microsoft Windows Media Player v.6.4 - not to be confused with "Media Player Classic" of a similar version number...

                      yeah, especially if what you want is M$ software to work properly
