I have made over 150 successful copies of movies I owned and usually im making 2 dvd5s for each dvd9 that I copy. The reason being Is that Im picky and tend to want 100% compression rate and nothing less. Does anyone else have a pet peave about using 100% compression rate or are people getting good picture quality with less than 100. If so, what compression rate is working for others? I once made once compressed at around 60 and it was all jerky and pixelated thats when I figuered if I had to use 2 I mind as well use 2. I just hate switching disks in the middle of the movie. TIA for all your help.
What compression do all of you use?

To backup my DVDs I use, DVD shrink and Nero.
Depends on the DVD. If I have enough room for no compression of course I will leave it.
Alot of my Burnt DVDs dont work. Probably because Of the media im using.
What brand of blank DVDs should I use?Comment

0.3%
I love to cram 72 hours of stuff onto one dvdr.
Of course, I'm blind and don't have to watch any of it, so who cares? (j/k)
I rip out the menus and extras, reauthor in dvdlab, and compress as needed to fit on one dvdr, unless it's an extremely long video (over 130 min), then I span it over 2.Comment

I've been using Shrink with anywhere from 90-60% compression, and haven't had any problems with "jerkiness." There's some pixilation on dark scenes, especially in B&W films, but I can live with that. I'd rather not have to switch disks in the middle of a vid.Comment

I've used up to around 60% without any problems without using deep analyse. I suspect it depends on the type of video ie high action, colors and quality of the source video.Comment

what compression
I always use Re-author in Shrink and depending on the length of the movie, sometimes no compression is required, or at most level 5. Always get a perfect picture, no jerking or pixelly pics. I have a Pioneer Dual Format 106 and I always use Ritek or Phillips +RW just to make sure okay with CopytoDVD, then copy that disc afterwards with Ritek Datasafe. I think a lot depends on the media you use. I went for cheap stuff like FWS and Infiniti with bad results.
One thing about using Re-author, I came unstuck with subtitles in Kill Bill but funnily enough was fine with City of God (all subs). So when I get a movie with a few subs, go for still picture with all the trailers and rubbish etc. then put my DVD+RW through Movie Clone, choose Feature Film and burn. A long winded way of doing things I know, but it justifies using Movie Clone which was a waste of money otherwise.Comment

Yep, other than the problems as mentioned in my thread about 'playback inconsistencies' I get an extremely good quality picture. I couldn't imagine needing to do to 2 discs, although could this compression have something to do with my pixelation and freezing problems during playback? Hmmmmm!Comment

I have used level 9 compression with Shrink but dont get pixelly probs. Are you sure it's not to do with the discs you are using or even the player? Buy a pack of decent rewritables depending what your burner is and experiment. I have had loads of mishaps in the past but now stick to the same thing ie. old version of Shrink 2.3, a French program named CopytoDVD (tried Nero, Pinnacle, Roxio,(all hopeless for me) and Ritek Datasafe discs then finally use Roxio Disc Copier with no probs - having said that something will probably go wrong nowComment

Further, I had another look at Amores Perros. It's a 6gb movie (only) and my DVD Shrink backup is around 4.3gb.
I watched the backup compared to the original on my Fujitsu 50" plasma (not an A, B comparison) and fair dinkum, a blind man would be happy to see the difference.
For the average viewer, there is no difference to speak of.
The quality is excellent.
Cheers again.
