    Capture Help- NTSC Format

    Hi-
Im using a Canon GL1 and connecting it to my computer though a firewire cable. Every time i capture in an NTSC mode, which uses aprox. 117mb/minute, resolution is 720x480 the playback is always choppy. The only way to get a clean playback is when i record in WMV mode where the disksize is about 15 megs a minute. I want to be able to capture video, edit it and put it onto tape at the end. Anyone know how to fix this. Thanks.

    welcome to the forum, Kronikle88

Well, you should have told us a little bit more about the
application that you used to capture and encode.
    this would have been helpful.
but you stated that you were able to capture in *.wmv format
the filesize of 15 MB indicates that an mpeg code is wrapped
in that format (either Mpeg2 or MSmpeg4 V2/3)
the fact that you are able to capture in fullsize along with the
small filesize of the movie when WMV is used indicates that an
    mpeg 4 codec is used.
you can now either use the ASF Tools (available in softwaresection
of this site to reextract the audio and video data from your WMV
file back into an *.avi file and then edit it with your preferred
    movie editing software.
or you could use another Mpeg4 codec such as Divx Pro or
XVID to encode your video when capturing. (if your captureapplication supports that)
the fact that you get clean playback with WMV encoding indicates,
that your machine is propably fast enough to do so.
I would suggest a videobitrate at 1200-1500 kbits and
uncompressed audio (PCM) for initial capturing.

The program i was atempting to use for the AVI NTSC format video capture, is adobe premier pro. The file size was approx 178 megs a minute. Is their any codecs i can download so i can capture to this format, at 720x480 res in avi format, rather then the wmv and converting it?

I already suggested that you use the "divx codec pro" or the Xvid
codec. these are codecs of high compression in Mpeg 4 format.
as well as the MSMpeg4 format that you use when capturing in wmv. you must save them as avi, when capturing with adobe premiere.
check out the softwaresection of www.divx-digest.com
when capturing with divx or xvid and adobe Prem. set the
keyframe interval to 100 frame maximum. and a bitrate of 1500.
in the divx codec configuration utility .give it a try.
        or check out www.divx.com.
by the way the method I suggested with the asf tools is NOT
a conversion simply an extraction ... this takes only a fragment
of the time a conversion takes.

you can also try to capture with the help of virtualdub mod
if your capture device supports it. there you can choose any
codec you want if your cpu is fast enough
