Hi'a,

Ok, I've sussed out how to capture, edit and save my old vhs movies to dvd (for the most part). But HOW, oh HOW do I view a VHS tape on my pc screen? I have my VHS player connected to my pc for capture. And when I capture video (using MM2) I can see what's being played on the preview screen....however, I just want to be able to put a tape my connected VHS player, and watch it on my pc screen.

Thanks in advance for your help....and please, I'm not an expert, so layman's terms would be much appreciated...

normally an application is provided with your capture device
to view movies from external source.

since you did not tell us anything about the device you use
or the apps you use, it is very hard for us to be of accurate help.
please be a little bit more specific.

but for now:
in the software section of this site, there is a player
Called MV2 Player.
get this one.
once installed start it. then rightclick on the playercontrol panel
and refer to the now upcoming menue. hover with your mouse
over the submenue "Capture Devices". now a list of all found
capture devices is displayed. choose the one that imports
your VHS signal into your PC.
If you capture over a TV card simply start the TV card application
and switch to the Videoin Channel wich is mostly called AV or
Svideo in. maybe a configuration in the settings menue of your TV application is neccesary
to tell the application whether you use the Svideo in or
composite in or DVi or whatever else.

Sorry I was so fague! Like I said, I'm a real novice, so didn't really know what to tell ya. However, thanks to you for your recommendation. I have just downloaded the MV2 Player.

My capture device is nVidia WDM Video Capture (universal). I think I have a TV card.... (told ya I didn't know much ) but dont think I 'capture' over it. I am running XP Home

I started up the MV2 player....and pushed 'play' on my video machine and got sound through my speakers, but no image on the MV2 Player. Any more suggestions would be great. Thanks...

The following MAY be pertinent to your situation:


There have been several postings over the past few months regarding this specific matter. The solution is to download and install the older NVidia driver(s)...


"The 41.09 and future drivers have more stringent checks in the driver to comply with the latest Macrovision requirements. If the TV encoder does not support Macrovision, you will get the "Macrovision Distribution Failed" error message or a similar message depending on which DVD software player you are using. The BT868 and Conexant CX25870 TV encoders do not support Macrovision. If your graphics card is equipped with one of these TV encoders, then it will not support DVD playback with our 41.09 drivers and above."

HI'a Setarip..

It's not DVD's that I'm trying to view. I can watch DVD's on my pc no probs. It's a VHS tape I'm trying to view on my pc. My VHS Recorder/player, is connected to my pc. I can view the VHS tapes in preview mode, when I am capturing video using Movie Maker 2. I just want to be able to view in on my pc normally, like I can with DVD's. I hope I haven't misunderstood your comment...lol.

Don't have a clue what you're talking about though...sorry. Might have to put up with viewing them in MM2 for now, till I understand a bit more about encoders, 41.09 drivers and the like...lol

if you have a TVcard check if the TV card has video in sockets.
most video cards have them in two versions.
1. S-Video in
2. Composite In. (looks like a chinch socket but colored yellow).

then check your manual of the VHS recorder what kind of video out
sockets it provides.
if it has s-video out just connect the VHS s-video out to the TV card s-video in.

if you have composite in use a composite video cable and do it likewise.
then start your VHS engine. then simply start the TV card application
and switch to the Videoin Channel wich is mostly called AV or
Svideo in. maybe a configuration in the settings menue of your TV card application is neccesary
to tell the application whether you use the S-video in or
Composite in as external source.
I used this solution for several years with a Pinnacle pctv pro.
and no macrovision ever affected the playback.

note that the S-video solution provides much better quality than
the composite solution though the cable is a little bit more expensive.

Shiny, you are sooo patient. And I appreciate it!

Now, umm, I took a pic of the back of my base unit so you could see if I have that chinch socket thingy . How can I get my pic to you? I'm not sure what TV card app I have (if I have one). I could take a screen shot of my programme list and you could take a look.

Let me know if this is too much hassle, or if it's fine.

The other thing is.....I think I must have it set up right with the appropriate cables cos I can easily view the video through Movie Maker 2 when capturing video.

Ok.....soak all that in, then get back to me...

when answering, do not use the quick answer method. hit the "Reply" button.
on the bottom of the new appearing browserwindow
you see a feature called "Attach file"
hitting the "choose" button lets you choose a file of the permitted formats from your harddisk.
you can post a *.jpg file smaller than 100 kbyte.
(if neccesary, resize it.)
but it is better when you post a screenshot of your device manager first ( normally under "Audio Video and Game Controller" your TV card should be listed ) then you can post a screenshot of your TV card application from the program list in the next thread. and a shot of the back of your PC next!
what makes me wonder is, that you might have a TV card and you do not know it?

have you bought this PC second hand , or is it a computer, that you bought at a discounter? ... if so, let me know the date of purchase and the model and I can look it up myself.

Thanks for that Shiny....(or should I say 'spiney' after look at that pic...lol. Is that you in Clingon mode? Amazing.

Here is the device list....it looks like I do have a tv card (well, at least to my novice eyes...)...lol.

I've attached a pic of the back of my pc too. If it's not clear enough...let me know. It's a real mission getting behind it to take the pic..lol.

unfortunatly I have not spottet a Svideo in at the backside
of your PC nor did I spot a VideoIn for analog signals. ist that on Front side????
but your devicelist tells me that you maybe have this card installed.

in this case there must be a program on your installation disk
called ASUS Digital VCR.
since you have been able to record from VHS engine already
the signal coming from the VHS engine is already visible to your
WDM capture driver! so no additional cable connection should be
required. you simply suffer from the problem that mm2 does
not support full screen viewing? maybe the Asus digital VCR
has such a feature!
let me know if my assumption is right.
if the Digital VCR does not support full screen viewing maybe there
is a third party program which does the trick. but for that I must
have exact knowlegde of your card and capture device....

Hey'a Shiny,

Ok, I have figured out that it is a Composite not svideo (whatever that means...lol). Cos when I set the options for video, I get to choose between both composite and svideo, but composite gives me a better picture to watch....that make any sense?

Also, I only have ASUSDVD XP.

Sorry I forgot to answer your previous question about my pc......my brother made it up for me, but he and I live in different cities....so it's easier for me to just potter around online for the answers (not to mention our friendly competitiveness....lol. I love to find out new things and then skyte to him about it...lol).

I have been trying to get a really clear video capture...it's so frustrating. I capture video fine, but the quality is not that hot.....there seems to be a lag in playback. Ah well.......not to worry, I'll sort it out eventually....be nice if it's before I die...

yes, it does. but now it is me who is a little confused.

note: the cappture device you mentioned is not your hardware,
but your installed capture driver I guess.
the Asus DVD XP is the software that came with your card.

now I must ask: how did you connect your VHS engine with your
PC? with a Composite cable???

and what exactly is the hardware named that is built in to your
computer that does the capture.

does your computer have a socket that looks like this?
see picture!!! it is important , that if you have such a
socket that it is named Video in or Video In/out
your device list says that you have built in a V9520 Video Suite
