Ok.....I've altered the pc back pic to show you where my video plugs in. Take another look. It's definately a composite cable.

On the back of my video machine, there is a big bulky plug, with several sockets... I've named them on the pic.

Ok, as far as I can see, although there are a couple of sockets that look like that, none have s-video in/out on them. Only one which is on the back of my video machine, but has no cable attached to it, because the composite cable runs from 'Video' to where you can see I've marked on the pic.

Is all this sending you spare?...lol

I'm afraid I don't know what the hardware is. I thought all the hardware devices were listed on that pic I sent you? And I thought it was the nVidia Capture ...?

How are you doing with all that info...lol. Poor fella....I'm feeling a little guilty now taking up all this time. Wish I knew more and could help you more.

How can I find out what the hardware is, short of opening my pc unit (which I just ain't confident enough to do!).

    Thanks again Shiny...

    Me..

Crikey, we made it to page 2!!

OK, this is going to be a very long message.

But I will try to answer the most of the questions that you asked,
or that came up during our conversation.

First of all I guess that I know (80 %) what card you have built in.
It was a little bit confusing because your device list
clearly stated that you have an Asus Video Suite built in.
the specifications list on the manufacturer's home page
said that this videocard is equipped with s-video in.
but the picture of your backside of your PC denies that.

If you would like to find out what card you have exactly built in,
without opening the case, I recommend a benchmark testing program
such as SANDRA. This software is freeware in the normal edition.
It is able to identify the most common hardware in your computer.
It can also tell you the features your hardware supports.

Now back to your problem. I suggest that you use a capturing software
that was specially programmed for your card, for simply viewing your videos. of course you can stick to MM2 for recording if you like.
You can download digital VCR on this page. (freeware)

this software should support full-screen viewing of a signal from external source.

Once you've checked out what model of capturing card you have built in
with the help of SANDRA, you can download the most appropriate software from the manufacturer's home page.

Now for the difference between composite and S-video.
with S-video the signals for brightness, contrast and color
are transferred separately. That's why the super video socket has four
      pins.
with Composite video all those information is are transferred via
one conductor. That means the signal for brightness, contrast and color
are joined together and must be separated again by your video capture card. This is not fully possible, because interferences occur.
Just think of your Whisky Cola or whatever you prefer.
You can tell by taste that it is made of Whiskey and Cola, and if you are
a very experienced drinker you can even tell what whiskey was used.
And maybe what Cola. ((good capturing cards)/ drinkers.).
But you will not be able to reseparate the Whiskey and the Cola fully.
This means your video capture card is not able to reproduce
the video fully from the signal when Composite is used.
      Some information remains mixed.
The reason why especially you get better results when using the
composite adjustment is, that you simply don't have a s-video signal.
the graphic card assumes that there is a s-video signal
(since the signals of composite and s-video are similar) and tries to make the best out of it.

one last thing: I hate to bother you again, but I have attached
the rearview of your PC again. I have also marked a special socket
or a device that looks to me like an adapter ,which was later on applicated. I know that is a mission to get behind your PC,
but could you please take a clear foto of this device
and send it? this looks like a s-video adapter to me.

          Hey'a Shiny,

I tell you.....you should be nominated for the award for 'Most Helpful Tech Expert'!!

I will certainly take a pic for you of that. If you can go to all that trouble for me, I can certainly get behind my pc again

I'm off to church now (not allowed to take whiskey in.... hehehehe) but when I get back, I'll take a pic and send it...

I hope you don't mind if I add you to my buddy list. I'd hate it if I got another thing I couldn't sort, and couldn't contact you....ugh!! But I promise I wont inundate you with queries!

          Thanks Shiny...

PS...Just curious, what's the relevance of your 'Handle' shiny?

          Bless ya......Michaela

Ok, we're doing well. I reckon we nearly got it sussed..lol.

I have three pics of that plug. I downloaded SANDRA but am not sure what icon to click on. Is it 'Open GL Video Information'?

                Let me know...

I'm downloading that VCR viewer thing. Thanks...will let you know how it goes.

I'm sure that will sort my viewing out. I just would like to get the capture quality better. I know that's a huge subject...so I'll give you a rest, and then we can get into that....maybe..??...lol.

                Thanks shiny....

picture one and 3 did not show a Svideo plugin.

but what has happened to that small device which was attached to that very left port? did you remove it??

                      I haven't removed anything..??

I downloaded that Asus Digital VCR which I am very keen to use. But it must be corrupted or something. So I spent about 4 hours yesterday reinstalling it, to try to uninstall it properly. Nothing has worked. Now it doesn't show in my Add/Remove programmes list, but is available to use from the ASUS scheduler icon that runs at startup. When I open the programme I get all these error messages. Then when I exit it, I get an error message that repeats itself (absolutely looks haywire!) and fills up my screen with the same box....until I have to ctrl+alt+del and end task.

Don't worry about all this, I'll work it out. I reckon once I get this Asus thing sussed, I'll be able to sort out better capture as well as watch the video on my screen as normal (which was how all this started...lol). I'm thinking of reformatting my hard drive as I really want to get this asus thing sussed out....and I can't see any other way of removing the corrupted programme from my machine without do a reformat. What do you think?

                      Blessings.....Me

I would not be so fast with a complete removal of all your data.
if you have XP running as operating system just do a rollback
to a timepoint before installing that Digital VCR.
sorry that I have been giving such a hazardous advice....

I am looking for another solution...

                            Hi'a Shiny,

Your advice hasn't been hazardous!! It's just one of those things eh.....pesky pc's...lol.

Unfortunately I can't roll back. The day that I'd installed the Asusdvcr, was the day I did a wipe of all my free space. For that you have to turn off system restore, and when you turn that off, it deletes all prior set points. Ah well......I'll just chalk it down to experience eh...

Thanks for all your help, Shiny....
