Freeze Problem with Any DVD Software

    Hi

I am trying to Author Disc as well as make a back up copies of my dvd camcorder disc.
My machine freezes at the time of Menu building and encoding in myDVD, showbiz etc.
For backing up, it freezes around 38% in DVDXCopy Platinum. It used to work fine few days back. So I was able to do backup.

I had a Sony DRU510 replaced with MADdog 6-1 writer, having same results.

It goes till 38%, my harddisk access light on front panel stops blinking and power supply light on panel, turns from green to blinking Amber/Yellow. And then I have to reset the machine manually.

For ImageMixer, I get Can't Write to DVD error.

My fan speed is fine, and need to check with http://www.mrbass.org/dvdnewbie/#1. But I think everything is fine.

I haven't written anything on any disc and they are new. I have tried changin burner as Master, Slave, CSEL. But same result.

Please HELP!!!!!!. How do I similar thing as msconfig in Xp for win2k.

    My system info:
    1. HP Vectra vl 800 (Intel Pentium 1.5 Ghz)
    2. 256 Ram
    3. Sony dru-510 burner as well as MadDog 6-1 burner.
    4. Windows 2000 pro
    5. All the windows update applied.
    6. Intel Ultra ATA IDE support (Installed as a default). Don't see any Primary and Secondary IDE Channels.
    7. Intel Chipset

As under warranty, following components have been changed
    1. Motherboard - Intel Chipset
    2. Processor
    3. Audio Card
    4. Hard Drive(twice)
    5. I replaced SONY DRU-510 burner with Maddog(NEC). Sent Sony drive back for servicing.
    6. RAM(PC800)
    7. IDE Cables
    8. StarLogic DVD-R and Memorex DVD-RW
    9. I haven't changed any default clock speed, so have no idea how to change it, if it is overclocking and how do I find it.

I have installed following DVD software
    1. MyDVD
    2. RecordNow
    3. DVDXCopy
    4. Latest Version of DVDShrink
    5. Latest Version of DVDDcrypter
    6. Showbiz
    7. ImageMixer
    8. Pinaccle Express
    9. DLA (Removed)
    10. Hp DVD Player

Right now I have unintalled all the software, keeping DVDXCopy and My dvd.

    1) Check to see if your system is overheating

    2) Are you possibly running out of hard drive space?

      Thanks for the quick reply.

Hp Technician checked the fans. But how do I check whether the system is overheating.

2 Hard Drive of 40 GB each, Primary has around 30 empty, secondary around 35GB empty. I have setup the temp directory to secondary.

I have tried to setup the temp to primary but had the same problem.

Only thing is Both are FAT32 and not NTFS.

        Update :
I ran speedfan (Excellent Program) with CPU Burn, and what I found that system froze after 8 mins.
Heres the few results from SpeedFan (Don't understand a thing though):

        SMBus msg : SMB Error $2D : COLLISION (48)
        SMBus msg : SMB Error $2D : COLLISION (48)

Where I can go and check what it means.

Temp2 and Temp reached around 68 degrees. Fan01 and Fan02 were 0%. Where do I check where the fans are.

Also, in device manager I saw AmosNT under Non-Plug and Play Drivers having conflict. I am not sure how to resolve that too or if that is of any relevance.
        Thanks

          More Update:
I took the side cover off, got a small fan and blast it on motherboard, temp went down, burnt 2 dvds. No system hang.
I am going to test more.

Sounds like my initial speculation was correct, to wit:

"1) Check to see if your system is overheating"

You might want to install either a lrger fan or an additional fan in your system...

Thanks. Today I am going to test with other programs - myDVD and see if my external home fan does the job and then tell HP Event manager to send me new bigger fan for the CPU and the machine.

Have you got any idea what does those messages I posted before ment.

              Once Again thanks a lot.

You might want to try "Motherboard Monitor" to check the temperature. If it's 68C that is pretty high for a socket temperature and a bit on the high side for core temperature. The 2 fans reading 0rpm are probably just unused motherboard sockets. Make sure your case, especially the CPU fan and heatsink are clean. Blow it out with some compressed air.

Thx. Hp is sending me new Heat Sink and New Fan for the processor and the unit. Lets hope that solves the problem.
