    2 channel vs 5 channel

Ok so if I have a standard TV and DVD player, no fancy dandy 5.1 home speaker setup, on titles like the Sopranos that tend to be HUGE, cant I save space and just not have the 5.1 selected, would I notice a difference? Granted its only about a 5.8 difference in compression, but still, that's probably a good amount of quality. And, at the same time, would there be any problems if I did just 5.1 and not 2 channel? Do they feed off eachother? sorry if this is a dumb question...please help.

    "Do they feed off eachother?"

    No

Just make certain that the 2 channel audio is NOT ONLY "Director's Commentary"...

I would DEFINITELY keep the 5.1 If you ever get a digital surround setup you will enjoy the 5.1 a LOT more. Delete the 2 channel if you like but there is no way you will notice such a small quality difference. I ripped Return of the King. Shrink had to use the maximum compression to fit the 3.5 hr movie on one DVD and it's still very hard to noitce the difference on a 32" sony with S-Video.

Do yourself a favor and get a 5.1 setup. Even a cheap all-in-one package will be a huge improvement over TV speakers, you'll love it and can probably get one for less than $200.
