    Capturing DV video

    Hi Guys,

I have just purchased Nero 6 and need to capture all my video files from a DV Handycam.

My Question: What file type is it best to capture the video in???

    AVI
    DV-1
    DV-2
    DVD (MPEG-2)

I will probably use either Pinnacle studio 9 or Nero to edit the video with. I see that AVI files are much larger than MPEG-2, does that make the quality better?

Please shed some light on this for me

    Cheers,

If you want to retain the best quality, I would capture in AVI using a "Lossless" video codec. Afterwards, you can compress to mpeg-2 for the purpose of burning to DVD. Capturing on the fly to mpeg 2 is the fastest method, and depending on your hardware, should yield satisfactory results.

"What file type is it best to capture the video in???"

What will your FINAL video type be?

(For DVD, capture as MPEG-2 DVD, for .AVI capture as .AVI)

I will eventually edit the movie and burn it as DVD so I can play them on my home DVD player.

I have a fairly good machine and the mpeg 2 video I have captured seems to be good quality.

So I guess to save disk space I am just best to capture as mpeg 2 and then save as DVD format after editing. Correct my if I am wrong.

That should do fine. For best quality use AVI for all your editing, then output to mpeg2, but the AVI will take about 12gb/hr.

That's correct - and there's no reason whatsoever to involve .AVI format at any stage...
