i take it when you say
the only thing that is different is that i upgraded my comp
as meaning that you have burnt dvds before and that they have worked
if that is the case then there are a few things that you can check
first is make sure that when windows detected your new chip it hasn't changed any of your motherboard setting, most importantly the transfair method for the dvd writer, make sure it is in DMA mode not PIO,
also try to get hold of any new firmware for your drive, both these problems have caused me problems with dvd drives in the past

He means transfer method. Go to control panel, system, hardware, device manager, IDE controlers, advanced.

Some movies may take that long to encode but most should take less than an hour to encode and 17 min or so at 4x. If your using 2.4x disks 30 min is about right.

Press ctrl-alt-del when your computer is not doing anything and note your cpu usage and which applications are using it under "processes". Anything using more than a few percent is going to slow you down since encoding is very processor intensive. Some of it may be spyware. Scan your computer with Spybot and an antivirus either way to be safe. Also you should see NO USAGE on your hard drive light when your computer is idle.

Your processor usage SHOULD BE 100% when encoding. Also are you playing games or using other programs during backup?

You didn't mention what your cpu and hard drive usage is when your computer is idle.
