    Can an mpg be shrunk?

    Hi All,
I have a 50MB video that is an mpg file and have it sitting on a web site. I want to know if there is a way to shrink the file to reduce the 50MB size of it but yet keep the same quality. Is this possible?

    Thanks,

If you convert to divx you should be able to cut down the size to 10 mb or so with around the same quality. You can use FlaskMPEG with the latest Divx codec.

If you want to keep it as an MPEG try using ReJig, although it might only work with MPEG-2 files and you have to demux first.

File size is determined by the length of the video and the bitrate used. You can re-encode with a lesser bitrate but this could lower the quality especially with faster action scenes. The other way and best IMO is to do as "Phytrax" stated. Use Divx or Xvid (my favorite).
