How to remove scratches

I have a DVD that my kids have scratched that when it plays, a section or two gets very blocky, stuttery, and the DVD then freezes. I've put off buying a 2nd copy for about as long as I can handle...and the "Daddy, I want to see the Wiggly Christmas video!" screams are going to increase as we near the holiday season

Is there a way to safely remove the scratches on a DVD?
