    DVD capture software question

Hi, I bought a DVD recorder to record normal TV programs and then use the DVD to put into my PC to convert it to divx to play on my pocketPC. Only problem I have is that it looks like the DVD recorder I have, creates VOB files that when you try to open then in a VOB tool are locked (eg they appear to have XP file permisions locked), therefore I can not convert the files to divx for my PocketPC. Is there any DVD software player out there that you can play a DVD and capture the output to your hardisk also (no issues with encryiption as this is just my own created TV recordings). This is the only way I can think of doing it, without going and getting another DVD Recorder (on ethat does not lock VOB files).

    regards

Did you run the files through DVD DcCryptor?

      Structure Protection

Thanks for the lead, am trying it out now. It looks to be doing the trick were others have failed. Looking at the logs it looks as if the DVD recorder I have applies Structure Protection to the files ? Thanks and will let you know if it works out - regards

"when you try to open then in a VOB tool are locked (eg they appear to have XP file permisions locked)"

Are you saying that you cannot change administrator permissions in order to unlock the files, or is it that the DVD standalone recorder puts its own file-locking restriction on the files?

Since I am new to this, I am not sure if you are talking to me or RichardP. I don't know what happens with his recorder but when I upload my VHS tapes to the DVD+R, it creates a folder with VTS files in it which I could not edit or do anything with except in NeroVision. But Nero forced me into doing the edits from the disc rather than from my hard drive and it kept hanging up. (I could not open them in Make a DVD but had to use Make a DVD-VR, if you are familiar with Nerovsion) Anyway, as soon as I put the files through Decryptor (or now I tried Recode2), I can do whatever I want with them. I will learn all the lingo eventually so please forgive my lack of knowledge right now.

My response was clearly directed to "RichardP"...

I was not being "terse" at all as you put it - simply pointing out the fact that’s all. Don't take it so personally.

Ormonde, the vob files on the DVD+RW when written by the DVD recorder when put on a PC you can not, make copys of the files (get move / copy the file from DVD to Hardrive, VOB edit programs come up with errors opening the files etc). The only thibk I could find was that the XP file permissions are locked and cant be unloacked by the admin (have seen this with system level fil elocks in XP).

Anyhow tried out the suggested decryptor program and it worked very well in copyingthe files from the DVD to the hard disk andremoving any funnys. The logs on the decryptor did poin to a locked file structure in the VOB that it was removing. Think its oddity of the DVD recorder I am using (very cheap), but thatks to the feedback I have now rescued my DVD recorder outlay, and will be able to watch my recorded TV programs on the train on the way to work on my PDS. - thanks.
