Please help!! avi video thats divx doesn't play and i can't find a codec at all

don't even know if this is the right forum.

What should I do?? its a .avi and won't play... i have windows xp and the thing says locating codec, failed or whatever. i dl a codec called alpha 3.11 and it did absolutely nothing!!! and once i dl a codec what do i do if it's a .exe?? open through... ?

Download Avicodec. Load your file and avicodec will tell you what codec/s you need and if they are installed on your computer. Get avicodec in the tools section here www.videohelp.com

Thanks anyway, Tigerman.... already done it all.
i downloaded every codec i've seen and they were like 10 mb each... Yet when i try to play this video it says Error Connecting!! i'm never downloading a bad divx again! didn't realize how bad they were. I will just delete the video, seeing it will not ever play.
