I'm thinking about buying a DVD+-R writer with 16x burning on the + Disks and 8x on the - disks. Is it worth it, as i already have a + writer. And would i be better just going for a 16x - writer?

You may first want to check that your standalone dvd player supports DVD-R media before making purchasing it
You will also need media that is capable of being burnt at the increased speed.
If your DVD+R writer is a x4 then your burn time should only be approx 15 mins, x8 speed will only save you approx 7.5 minutes, is it really worth it?
I own a 8x DVD+/- writer but never write at the top speed

Hello
I suggest that a +/- Drive would be better but choose one that supports bitsetting.
As for burn speeds depends on the drives firmware to recognise a media that supports the speed the drive is able to burn at, being that x4 x8 x16.
In other words if the drive firmware only supports burns at x8 on one brand of media i.e. Ritek G-05 it wont burn at x8 all x8 DVD -/+ available in the market.
The faster you go the better media you have to buy.
Allways check compatibility.
