    Unformatted/Unfinalized DVD-R after burn

    Hi guys,

    Wonder if so could help...

I've been trying to burn 2 different media brands in DVD-R recently, t.i. Princo (id code: Princo) and Ridisc (id code: Ritek G04) and it appears that the two of them won't play on my Himage DVD player nor on my PC drive after I burned them.

It seems like the DVD won't finalize or something like that. Could anyone tell me if there is any way I could finalize these DVD's now that they're burnt? And is it a finalise-problem actually?

Thanks for your help! I bought 50 of these and I hope they're not for the trash.

Here is what I got from DVD identifier:

Did you solve the problem with your firmware according to this post?

Talk about converting to DVDs, encoding in MPEG-2 for DVD compliance, as well as DVD playback and DVD region-free discussions

Could be that the hacked firmware is the trouble.

Princos can be tricky to burn without the right firmware.

Ok but the hacked firmware stands for the DVD-ROM drive (Mat****a) whereas I burnt my Princo with my DVD-/+ RW drive LiteOn 851S (with official firmware GS0K)

Yeah, it was, but it's been taken off because there were some problems with this latter. It is no more on their site.

Another handy tool is this - the OmniPatcher for LiteOn DVD-Writers:

I wish I had a Lite-on burner or that there was such a program for Nec...

                  To Ivandervaeren

If you are using NERO for burning your DVDs, make certain it is set to NO "Multisession". Also make certain it is set to "Disc-at-once"...

I'm actually using Intervideo DVD Copy Platinum to do the hole job (rip and burn) but I just used Smartburn tool from Liteon and I see that both Princo and Ridisc DVD-R's I used have a nominal capacity of 7.82GB!! Isn't it strange? Should be 4.38 (4.7) GB, shouldn't it?

Think you should use DVDShrink first - to get the size down so it would fit on a DVD5.

Ok that I knew but fact is that it is the nominal capacity I'm talking about. Besides, I inserted a blank dvd too and it said the same: 7.82GB nominal capacity! So I guess it is the max. capacity a dvd could allow.

That would be the approximate capacity of a DOUBLE-LAYERED DVD. Unless you paid approximately $10 apiece for the blanks, I doubt that this is what you have.

Perhaps you're misinterpreting something in the readout from your software...

No, not at all. That's the point actually. I paid around $12 for a 25 box but maybe I misinterpret "nominal capacity". What does it mean exactly? And is there any way I could finalize a DVD-R once it is burnt?

For that price is must be 4.7 Gb DVDs. Download this program and put one of your discs in to your reader/burner and find out what they really can fit. www.dvdinfopro.com

Once you have burnt a DVD-R it's "closed" forever.
