    What is DEP ?

    I don't use "codec packs", I only installed XviD and ac3filter 0.70, and I use WinXP SP1 and not SP2 (and even when I had SP2 it didn't help...)

      DEP (data execution prevention) this only applies to sp2. for more info check it out at the microsoft website.

        I've noticed that playing .vob files with ac3filter makes the sound on the s/pdif output perfect, so it has to be something with the avi-splitter that takes the ac3 sound out from the avi file.. maybe xvid/divx codec problem ?
        who's codec exactly is in charge to spilt the avi file to sound+picture ?

          download & install the latest version of "ffdshow". force it to play ac3 sound.

            I'll try that..

            p.s.
            i'm using ac3filter 1.01a, and i'm able to use "spdif (AC3 encode)" on STEREO AVI FILES, and the reciever works perfect here too! and it detects all 5.1 channels !

            so the problem is only with SPDIF PASSTHROUGH AND AC3 SOUND AVI's...

              Doesn't help... with ffdshow's audio decoder (instead of ac3filter) set on AC3 -> S/PDIF = same problem.

                  Do you also have a Creative SoundBlaster (of any kind) ?

                        I still have this problem.
                        The only solution I found is to switch to another sound card, instead of Creative's.

                          "the problem is only with AVI(divx/xvid) files with ac3 sound..."

                          If these aren't files that YOU have created, have you considered the possibility that they were created with 2 channel .AC3 audio, rather than 5.1?

                            of course not..

                            these are "world-wide avi+ac3 movies"

                              I'm afraid I have no idea what this means vis-a-vis the .AC3 format (Perhaps I shouldn't want to knopw?)

                                i mean that it's not my own created files, but a avi+ac3 movies downloaded from emule (..), that works for everyone else.
