How to convert DVD to MOV

Is there a way to encoded dvd to mov with a codec or something? I am going to be trying installing Mac OS X and using virtalpc to run it.. emulate the os and do it that way but if some one knows a easier way of doing it I am all ears and you will have my most honored appreciation.

I am in the same boat my friend, though i am working from a pc. i need to convert a vob (dvd) file to a mov. ive tried many things, the closest ive come is using DVD to VCD AVI DivX Converter to convert to avi, then using quicktime pro 6.5 to export it to .mov, but i had two problems with this, a) the first program mentioned is a trial and wouldnt convert the whole file, and b) even when i tested the incomplete but viewable avi by exporting it through quick pro to mov for some reason there was no sound.... this probably isnt much help to you, but i thought id share my own problems....

I don't know if this will help you, exactly, but I am assuming you are trying to put a DVD onto an iPod, by first converting it to mov., then exporting it to iTunes. This may not be the "easiest" way, but it allows me to put my DVD's onto iTunes. Buy Quicktime 7 Pro-- http://www.apple.com/quicktime/win.html -- (not sure if you have to purchase this--but it's a good idea), then you have to purchase iPod Media Studio (makayama software)--http://www.makayama.com/dvdtoipod.html. This will total out to about $60-70, but it really works. I am using a pc, so hopefully this still works for whoever is having trouble.

Okay I took your advise and converted the files to mpeg4 and now how do I get them into the IPOD 30? Just purchased it yesterday and can't wait to see video of my kids.

Xilisoft only lets you convert 5 mins of the movie... try Auto Gordian Knot - then convert to AVI. Then try using iTunes or something to put the movie on... or try one of those video conversion programs (there is a free iPod one but not sure where)

If you keep cancelling and going it will let you do a whole movie, try it!

LOL! Won't it be in 5min chunks though?

Anyway, I don't have an iPod and have no reason to get such a crappy music player, so Ulead Video Studio is fine for me... it converts to WMV, RM, MOV, AVI, MPEG, and SVCD/VCD/DVD standards. Does all but MP4 (iPod) video.

Actually you were right about all of the 5min videos.

So if it is for an iPod then you want mp4 not mov anyway. Even if it wasn't for an iPod, I would still go with mp4 over mov. As long as you limit yourself to SP MPEG-4, mostly main profile AVC and lc aac should work fine.

The iPod I believe supports SP MPEG-4 and baseline AVC. You might want to checkout MeGUI with Sharktooth's iPod profile. Quick Time's AVC and SP MPEG-4 encoders suck anyway. Their aac encoder is good though. MeGUI uses x264 for AVC encoder and although for iPod compatibility most features are disabled, it is a hell of a lot quicker than QT.

I thought iTunes can convert for you? At least it does for audio. Don't quote me on that - I don't have an iPod. Just a thought.

Quicktime's AVC and MPEG-4 encoders just suck though, especially under windows. Their aac encoder is good though.
