"Illegal track" error on Roxio

I've been backing up my dvds for a year now using DVDXCopy Platinum wtih near 100% success....... Also copying those burns with Roxio Creator 6 also with even higher success...... until recently...........and yes, I know some don't like these programs but we've used them for a year with NO PROBLEMS whatsoever......
I first noticed that some movies would freeze and skip through when playing some recent burns. Those particular movie copies, when copied again with Roxio, would give me a "illegal track" error during the read process.....
I had just changed media to 8x so thinking it was writing a little too fast, I switched back to 4x media and refreshed my firmware for the writer and checked anything else I could check. My son has the same software and he has had NO problems at all...........
I thought I had it licked when yesterday the same error showed up........ BUT.... it appears the error occurs when I use my dvd reader to copy to my writer..... and when I use the writer itself to copy back to itself, all does it properly with no problems...........
Something has changed and I am just wanting a dialog here on this forum in hopes of locating this problem so I can go back to burning as I have for so long.......

First what type of Drive?

Second what Brand of Media?

Getting that info to us might allow us to point out a known problem.

Check that Windows hasn't switched your DVD player DMA off?

It's an IDE DVD-Rom drive.... the second is a Sony DRU530a drive (writer).

I've had these errors with Verbatim DVD+R 8x, Memorex +R 8x, TDK +R 8x and Sony +R 4x so I kinda ruled out a media problem.

When this started a couple of weeks ago, I did find that windows had switched to the PIO transfer mode but that was corrected back to DMA.....

These read errors happen when I use the IDE to burn a copy to the Sony writer but not when I use the Sony to read and copy to itself. I've uninstalled and re-installed the IDE reader, updated the Roxio program also. Making a copy from a copy remains the only problem at this point and only when I use the IDE reader .....

BTW... I noted my reader is on "region 1" and my writer is on "region 2"... what should it be? The Sony writer will NOT accept a change from 2 to 1....

As long as you're burning to Region zero this shouldn't be a problem.

Hi,

I think what sfheath was getting at is that simply reseting DMA in device manager is normally not enough. It might be an idea (unless you have already done it) is to check in device manger what is currently being used DMA or PIO (box underneath) not just what it is set to... Normally with the problem you have, it is the setting has reverted back to PIO on the reader (you have already proved the writer works ok).

Could it be possible that your Drive is worn out?

Yeah, I've been thinking the same thing. When something doesn't work, I usually junk it and drive another one into its place!

Actually, I believe most of my problem is the 8x media. I've successfully burned and re-copied several movies as long as I use 4x media for the original !!! Strange but that seems to work. Also have found that one of my standalone dvd players (Panasonic) is the only one with the problem playing the 8x burns.....
I've tried locking the Sony DRU530a into 4x burn but it continues to burn up to 8x regardless.......

I am continuing to burn and copy, copy and burn and try to shake out any remaining bugs.........Good thing I have a lot of media...LOL

It's hard to understand this. Doesn't the Roxio software allow you to select and set the burn speed? if not, perhaps you SHOULD consider an alternative, such as NERO...

Thanks setarip for reminding me of that! I've been trying to set my writer itself at 4x and I guess I simply missed the option in Roxio that allows the speed to be set. DUH!!!!
I do believe this whole problem has been associated with the use of 8x media and the program making use of the increased speed available.
Roxio has always been so "automatic".......... and some of us "older folks" can definitely get into a rut when it is so easy for so long.....

Perhaps that info is gonna put this month long problem to rest!
