how to burn dvd data cd?

Ok i just formatted my computer and before i did i backed up as much as i could on a 4.7 dvd-r cd. Before backing it up i checked to see if it would work since i wouldnt want to loose everything and it worked. Now after i have formatted when i insert the cd windows says that it is an BLANK CD but when i put it into nero burning rom it says that the cd is full of files on the dvd-data mode but for some reason i cannot open these fiels is their something that i did wrong?could i recover these files somehow?

You're confusing the issue with use of the terms CD and DVD.
These media and devices though compatible need clearly defining. For instance, a CD player will not read a DVD and if you are inserting a DVD and Windows is reporting a blank CD then there could be a hardware fault.
Could you please explain everything carefully?

Ok sorry about that, here's the proper story.. i was going to format my computer so i burned a dvd-r with my backed up things on it before i deleted everything on computer. So after the burning process was complete, i checked the cd to see if it had worked and it did so i went along with the formatting. After formatting i insert the dvd-r and windows says that its a BLANK CD , but when i do info on the dvd-r in nero burning rom they said that its full , and identifies that it is a data-cd which i burned it under, but still i cannot access these files on the cd. can you help me with this please? i need these files

        You should have used data-DVD.
I'm surprised Nero accepted data-CD if you had a DVD media. This is the point I was getting at.
Does your DVD drive read DVDs since you reformatted?

Then I would check your written DVD with DVDInfoPro, the CRC check routine.
If, as you say the disc read back earlier there must be something there. Does Nero simply say it's blank or can you see a session in 'media properties' ?

Jordan, you might be better off starting a new thread.
Please be explicit with the application you're using and the errors reported and with the terms CD and DVD

I'm rather concerned that Windows is calling it a CD.
What CD/DVD drives are you using and have you tried all DVD devices?
DVDInfoPro has an icon that starts a CRC checking utility to check a media for readability.
It simply gives green spots for ok, white for dodgy and red for bad. All green would confirm your burn was ok.
From there we can try and sort why your player isn't reading it.

When you installed Windows after the format did you also update everything to SP2? If so did you update to SP2 before or after you installed Nero?
                          Cheers!
