xvid and divx codec

Hello I am new to this forum and maybe someone could help me out. i have just downloaded the movie 'Phantom of the Opera' in avi format. When I try to play it with Windows media player, it would not play and tells me I require XVID codec. I have downloaded this codec and installed it, however the movie would still not play. Does anyone have a clue of what might be wrong.
